A Brief history of Japanese bookstores in Sakhalin 1905-1945

この論文では、日本の樺太占領1905年から第二次世界大戦の終了1945年までの間のサハリン島南部、樺太、における日本人書店の歴史を略述する。
日露戦争時、日本はサハリンを占拠した。ポーツマス条約の結果、南樺太は日本の領土となり、移住者が増えた。日本人の書店もこの頃から生まれた。最初に名簿で確認できる書店は、1907年の樺太コルサコフ　齋藤支店である。その後の日本人経営の書店は増加していくが、1920年代の名簿には網羅的なものはない。1928年7月発行の『特選書籍商名簿』では9件が掲載されており、豊原3、大泊3、真岡2、泊居1となっている。1926年に樺太書籍商組合が成立する。1930年の会員数は88名だった。その後日配成立後の1942年の名簿には97店が確認できる。樺太の書店の増加は、移住人口の増大と連関するが、とりわけ教育制度の整備と関連が深い。戦前の樺太には中学校が3校、高等女学校が4校存在し、各学校には附属図書室もあった。大泊と豊原の教育会が、付属図書館も持っていた。

This paper describes a brief history of Japanese bookstores in Karafuto (Sakhalin) since the occupation of Sakhalin by Japanese army in 1905 to the end of the WWII in 1945.
In the war of Russo-Japan War, Japanese army occupied Sakhalin Island and Japanese Empire obtained the half south of the island after the Treaty of Portsmouth. Japanese settlers to Karafuto gained and began to build their towns. The first bookstore, “Saito branch,” which we can find in a name list of bookstore of 1907 emerged in Korsakov (Ōdomari, in Japanese name). Bookstores managed by Japanese assumed to gain gradually, but there is no comprehensive list during 1920s. A selective list published in 1928 reports 9 shops existed in Karafuto: 3 in Toyohara, 3 in Ōdomari, 2 in Maoka, and 1 in Tomarioru. In 1926, the Bookseller Association of Karafuto (樺太書籍商組合) was organized after the establishment of a National organization of bookseller associations (全国書籍商組合聯合会) in 1920. The membership of the Bookseller Association of Karafuto was 88 in 1930 and 97 in 1942. The increase of bookstores is related not only to population of Japanese in Karafuto but development of educational system. Before 1945, there used to be 3 junior high schools, 4 girls’ high schools and their libraries in Karafuto. Educational association of Ōdomari (大泊町教育会) and of Karafuto (樺太教育会) also had each public libraries of them.
